Artistic residency in CV
This event consists of bringing together a musician from each of the four countries involved, which will
use a traditional musical instrument of their country of origin.
Each partner will conduct a selection of a musician at a national level; the criteria for selection is the
use of a traditional instruments, and the level of professionalism of the applicants. The information is
gathered and partners will work together on a final selection. The criteria for the final selection is
professional skills of the musicians, type of instruments which will result in a viable ensemble (insuring
that not all instruments are strings or wind instruments). The musicians from each partner country will
travel to CV and will work in ensemble for 10 days. Each musician should, along with the partner
organization from its country, do a selection of three traditional songs and should prepare all the
information on the song in order to make it available to other musicians (recordings and written
scores). The CV partner is responsible for all the logistics necessary for the hosting of musicians as
well as for finding venues for the development of the activity. In the end of the residency the ensemble
should be ready to record the themes worked during the residency. This international musical
production will tour in all partner countries, including Portugal. Besides, it may subsequently
participate in other international festivals of traditional music. The residency will be held in Cape
Verde, partner country which has the best reception conditions for an activity of this kind. Music is
part of daily life, and currently reaches a high degree of aknowledgment and international diffusion,
due to the work of some Cape Verdeans musicians. These have become true ambassadors of Cape
Verde and its music in the world, whose highest expression is Cesaria Evora. This activity is intended
to encourage musicians to create new approaches to the use of traditional instruments that will allow
to undertake work beyond their borders, thus helping to stimulate the work internationally.
This activity will allow the participating musicians a direct contact with musicians from other countries,
the contact with the cultural reality of other countries and a work experience in an international level,
which is an important personal and professional experience, having in mind the limited opportunities
they have, especially the East Timorese musicians, Sao Tome and Cape Verdeans. This activity in
Cape Verde will also allow the partner to gain experience in organizing such activities.
This work should result in 12 musical themes, played by musicians and musical instruments from 4
different countries.
